It is a fun, dynamic and pluralistic gathering of Russian-speaking Jewish adults, and young families, for a weekend learning retreat. Organized entirely by volunteers, it’s designed to re-energize and empower our community, to connect with each other, and to explore our common culture, heritage and identity. Limmud comes from Hebrew and means to learn”. FSU stands for Former Soviet Union. An international movement, Limmud FSU gatherings have been hosted for a decade in Russian speaking Jewish communities around the world: Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, USA, Canada, Australia and Europe. In 2016, Limmud FSU West Coast premiered in Los Angeles. The first Limmud conference took place in December 1980, in Britain. Since its inception 35 years ago, Limmud has become one of the most successful Jewish cultural events in the world. In 2006, Chaim Chesler (Israel) and Sandy Cahn (USA) partnered with Mikhail Chlenov (Russia) to initiate Limmud gatherings in Russian speaking countries. Their goal was to give Jewish communities across the Former Soviet Union an opportunity to come together, learn and express their Judaism on their own terms. With generous funding from the Bronfman family, the pilot project was successfully launched in Moscow later that year. One decade later, Limmud FSU gatherings have attracted over 30,000 participants.
